The Ockford County Detention Center is a substandard correctional facility located on a long stretch of substandard road deep in the heart of South Louisiana. The facility itself is capable of housing approximately 170 inmates, along with an additional 12 belonging to the Louisiana Department of Corrections. It contains 10 separate cell blocks, the largest capable of housing 32 inmates, 3 minimum security bays with a holding capacity of 4 inmates each, two isolated cells (collectively known as “The Hole” to facility members) capable of containing 2 inmates each, and a separate trailer which houses the Department of Corrections inmates. Each cell block contains a dayroom, complete with a television set and one picnic-style table. There are at least 4 separate showers located on the larger blocks, with no showers in minimum security or isolated cells. It’s one of the oldest correctional facilities in the Deep South and is commonly referred to as “The Block” by those unfortunate enough to serve time there. The lack of air conditioning on the cell blocks only accentuates the poor, unsanitary conditions. The halls and decor of the jail are kept up daily, only serving as a facade, masking a deep, underlying germ-infected problem abundant throughout the entire facility. Due to the high turnover rate of inmates coming to and from the jail, no one stays long enough to care about keeping the blocks clean and those serving long sentences lack the motivation and initiative required to take proper action in resolving any unsanitary practices. Most of the inmates here are just wolves, passing time between these ignorant walls, waiting to return to their sheep……to be continued
